Few winners, but plenty of critics — the climate finance deadlock in Baku

Having been dubbed the ‘finance COP’, cash was always likely to dominate negotiations at the UN Conference of the Parties (COP29) climate summit in Baku. But on Friday afternoon, and with the prospect of the summit running into the weekend in desperate search of an agreement, wealthy states were facing accusations of keeping a tight grip on their chequebooks.
